tutorial discussion

in my medical anthropology & social justice tutorial we were discussing how racialized communities have weakened access to healthcare resources in canada.

then some white girl says, “people living in ethnic enclaves have been so segregated that they cannot participate in canadian society.”

people of colour ≠ canadian society

white people = canadian society

see this kind of stuff goes on in my classes all the time. well-meaning white liberals who have been spoonfed this canadian rhetoric of “the cultural mosaic” since elementary school. we’ve been told countless times that canada is a multicultural country that is ever accepting and we eat that shit up! funny, because people of colour are used in national & tourist discourse to promote the country, but when it comes down to it, nobody really thinks we’re canadian.
